If you want disable the AVG Search in address-bar, please follow these steps:

1) Type in address-bar about:config and press Enter
2) Confirm warning dialog
3) Find keyword.URL (you can use Filter)
4) Change value of keyword.URL to:

http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&q=

No, this doesn't work. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

The search box next to the navigation bar is still set to AVG.

I have found elsewhere since my post that the correct fix for this is:

Go to the about:config page as before.

Find the row

browser.search.defaultenginename

Change it to

Google

Restart your browser, all sorted!

Yes, but that's not what this blogpost is about :-). It resets the search engine in the navigation bar, not the search engine box.
You could easily select the dropdown list too to select your favorite search engine.

Seconded... is there a way that AVG users can ensure Google (or whatever) remains the default search engine used in the navigation bar, rather than having to use the about:config 'fix' every time they open Firefox?

Sorry, it's still working fine here, but I believe you are encountering this problem. I'm afraid you will have to look further on the internet.
If I find a possible solution, I will post it here

Hmm ... I'm afraid you are referring to the page Firefox needs to load when you open Firefox?
